Do I really need revision rhinoplasty, or should I leave my nose alone?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

No, not every unhappy nose needs another operation. Dr. Kim recommends revision rhinoplasty in Korea only when it is truly necessary, and after reviewing your nose, the honest answer is sometimes to wait, to fix something smaller, or to leave it as it is.

When revision is usually worth considering

Some problems rarely settle on their own, and these are the ones Dr. Kim most often sees as good reasons for nose revision surgery in Seoul: a breathing problem that started after your first surgery, an implant that has shifted or become visible, a bridge that has collapsed or looks clearly crooked, a tip that keeps pulling out of position, or ongoing redness, tenderness or inflammation.

When Dr. Kim may advise against it

Revision may not be the right call if the difference is small and comes down to personal taste, if swelling is still going down, or if you are comparing your nose to a photo of someone whose skin and bone are very different from yours. It is also a matter of what is left to work with. A nose that has already been operated on has less usable tissue each time, so the bar for another operation is higher than it was for the first one.

How long to wait after your first surgery

As a general rule, Dr. Kim suggests a revision consultation about 6 months after your first surgery, and revision surgery itself about 12 months after. The exception is severe pus or inflammation. In that case, do not wait. Go back to the clinic that performed your first surgery as soon as possible.

Leftover threads come first

If you have non-absorbable threads in your nose from an earlier procedure, Dr. Kim generally recommends removing them before anything else. It clears the way for a fair look at what the nose actually needs. You can read more in our guide to thread and foreign body removal.

How you find out without flying to Korea first

You do not need to book a flight just to learn whether surgery makes sense. Dr. Kim can review your photos and surgical history in a video consultation, and he personally creates a Photoshop simulation so you can see a realistic idea of the change. If revision is the right path, your coordinator will go over cost, payment and scheduling with you. Dr. Kim has focused on noses for more than 20 years and handles functional and cosmetic concerns himself, so one surgeon looks at both sides of the problem.

Consultation Tip

Before your call, write down the one or two things that bother you most, and ask Dr. Kim plainly whether operating now, waiting, or leaving your nose alone is the better choice for you. A clear "not yet" is a useful answer too.
