Is an MRI safe to get if I have cartilage or an implant from rhinoplasty in my nose?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

Yes — both cartilage grafts, including the autologous rib cartilage used in techniques such as KOWON's Ribfit, and the standard silicone implants used in rhinoplasty are MRI-compatible materials, meaning a scan presents no risk connected to your nose job.

It's still a good habit to mention your surgical history to the MRI technician beforehand. That's simply routine medical disclosure, not a sign that these particular materials pose any real safety issue in the scanner.

Consultation Tip

Keep a note of exactly which material — rib cartilage, septal cartilage, or silicone — was used in your rhinoplasty, so you can answer an MRI technician's questions precisely.
