Implant extrusion refers to a synthetic implant, such as silicone, gradually working its way toward the skin surface over time, eventually becoming visible or even breaking through the skin in severe cases. It's more common in patients with thinner skin, since there's less soft tissue to buffer and cover the rigid material long-term.
This is one of the central reasons our clinic favors cartilage-based techniques, including autologous rib cartilage and our Ribfit method, for patients with thinner skin specifically — since living tissue integrates with the body rather than remaining a permanent foreign object at risk of extrusion. If you have a previous silicone implant showing early signs of extrusion (thinning skin, visibility, or a slight shift), earlier evaluation gives Dr. Kim more options for correction.
Consultation Tip
If you have any previous silicone implant and notice thinning skin, increasing visibility, or a change in position, don't wait for it to worsen — reach out for an evaluation as soon as you notice these signs.
