How do I care for the incision or scar sites at home?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

For nasal incisions, which are typically inside the nostrils or, in open rhinoplasty, a small mark on the columella, gentle cleaning as directed and keeping the area protected from direct sun exposure supports optimal healing. If your surgery included rib cartilage harvesting, you'll also have a small chest incision that needs simple wound care during the first couple of weeks.

Dr. Kim's team will give you specific written instructions for wound care before you leave the clinic, including how to clean the area, any recommended ointments, and signs to watch for that would warrant contacting us. If you'd like to care for your scar even more thoroughly, scar-specific silicone sheets or ointments are also available for separate purchase at the clinic — these aren't required for normal healing, but some patients find them worthwhile for extra peace of mind.

Consultation Tip

Take a photo of your written wound care instructions on your phone as soon as you receive them — this way you always have quick access to the exact guidance even when you're back home and away from the printed sheet.
