Functional Rhinoplasty & Breathing

Can chronic sinus problems be addressed during rhinoplasty?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

To an extent — structural contributors to sinus problems, such as a deviated septum blocking sinus drainage pathways or enlarged turbinates obstructing airflow, can be addressed as part of a functional rhinoplasty, which may reduce the frequency or severity of related sinus issues.

That said, chronic sinusitis itself — ongoing inflammation or infection within the sinus cavities — is a separate medical condition from structural nasal issues, and severe or persistent cases may need additional medical management beyond what rhinoplasty alone addresses. Dr. Kim evaluates during consultation whether your specific sinus concerns are primarily structural (and therefore likely to improve with surgery) or require broader medical treatment.

Consultation Tip

Bring any prior sinus-related diagnoses or imaging you have, if available — this helps Dr. Kim distinguish between structural issues surgery can address and separate sinus conditions that may need other treatment.
