Bridge, Dorsum & Structural Concerns

What's the difference between augmentation and reduction rhinoplasty?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

Augmentation rhinoplasty adds height, structure, or volume to the nose — typically to the bridge or tip — using cartilage or, less commonly today, silicone. Reduction rhinoplasty does the opposite, removing or reshaping existing bone and cartilage to make the nose smaller, narrower, or less prominent, such as shaving down a bony hump or narrowing a wide bridge.

Many patients need a combination of both — augmenting the bridge while narrowing the bone structure, for example, or reducing a hump while adding tip support. Dr. Kim determines the specific balance of augmentation and reduction needed for your case based on your 3D CT scan and facial proportions, rather than treating your nose as needing purely one or the other.

Consultation Tip

Ask Dr. Kim to break down which specific parts of your plan are augmentation and which are reduction — most rhinoplasty plans involve both to some degree, and understanding this helps you follow the full picture of your surgery.
