Recovery & Aftercare

What sleeping position is recommended after surgery?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

Sleeping on your back with your head elevated — ideally at about a 30-45 degree angle, using extra pillows or a wedge pillow — is recommended for the first couple of weeks. This position helps reduce swelling by encouraging fluid drainage away from your face, and protects your healing nose from accidental contact or pressure.

Sleeping on your side or stomach should be avoided during this period, since either position risks putting direct pressure on your nose while you're not consciously aware of your movements during sleep.

Consultation Tip

If you're a habitual side or stomach sleeper, consider practicing sleeping propped up on your back with pillows for a few nights before surgery — this can make the adjustment easier once recovery begins.
