What is the minimum age for rhinoplasty?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

For purely cosmetic rhinoplasty, most surgeons — including Dr. Kim — recommend waiting until nasal growth is complete, which is typically around age 16-17 for female patients and 17-18 for male patients. Operating before the nose has finished growing can lead to results that shift as the remaining growth occurs.

Functional surgery — such as correcting a deviated septum that's significantly affecting breathing — can sometimes be considered earlier, since breathing difficulties can affect quality of life regardless of age. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Consultation Tip

If you're inquiring on behalf of a younger patient, mention their age upfront — Dr. Kim can advise whether it's better to wait, or whether a functional concern warrants earlier evaluation.
