Nasal Tip Refinement

How does thick or thin skin affect tip surgery results?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

Skin thickness has a major effect on how visible your cartilage work ends up looking. Thin skin shows underlying cartilage detail very clearly — this can create a sharply defined, refined tip, but it also means any irregularity in the cartilage work is more likely to show through, leaving less room for error.

Thicker skin, on the other hand, naturally softens and camouflages cartilage detail — this can make dramatic definition harder to achieve, but it also provides more forgiveness for minor cartilage irregularities and tends to hide the sharper edges of grafts more effectively. Dr. Kim assesses your specific skin thickness during your in-person consultation and calibrates his surgical plan and expectation-setting accordingly, since the same cartilage work can look meaningfully different across different skin types.

Consultation Tip

Ask Dr. Kim directly how your specific skin thickness will affect your achievable results — this is one of the most important, personalized pieces of information you can get from your in-person consultation.
