Ethnic & Asian-Specific Considerations

Are there different scarring tendencies to consider by skin type?

Published

Outcomes and side effects vary from person to person. Bleeding, infection, swelling and asymmetry may occur. Please consult our medical team before making a decision.

A

Yes — scarring tendency varies by individual, and there are some general patterns worth knowing. Darker skin tones can have a somewhat higher likelihood of hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening) at incision sites during healing, and some patients, regardless of ethnicity, have a personal or family predisposition toward keloid or hypertrophic (raised) scarring.

That said, there's genuinely good news here for patients who tend toward keloid scarring specifically. The areas where rhinoplasty incisions are placed — inside the nostrils, and for rib cartilage cases, along the chest — are locations on the body where keloids form far less readily, even in patients with a strong keloid tendency elsewhere. So while it's still worth mentioning a keloid history during consultation, it's not something you need to worry heavily about specifically for this surgery.

Consultation Tip

Mention any personal or family history of keloid or raised scarring during your consultation regardless — it's still useful background information, even though the incision locations used in rhinoplasty are naturally low-risk for keloid formation.
